Put the child's safety and age first
For a minor, communicate through the parent, guardian, court-approved route, or professional named in the family plan. Secret messages ask the child to carry an adult dispute and should be avoided.
Own your part without recruiting them
If the grandchild is an adult, acknowledge the distance and any behavior you need to own. Do not ask them to judge their parent, keep secrets, or prove loyalty to you.
- Use the authorized channel for a minor.
- Do not criticize parents or caregivers.
- Offer contact that can remain slow or limited.
Accept a relationship that may look different
Reconnection may begin with occasional updates rather than visits or holidays. Let the grandchild define what feels safe, and do not treat access as a right they must restore.
